The Game of Life.

Some oppy finds of late;

brownie flash II

A Box Brownie – I’ve admired these in Kelly’s photos & knew it would be mine the moment I saw it on the shelf in a rather dull oppy while we were on holidays.

A daggy little Viking – another holiday purchase.

Some more things for my wall, that I actually got around to hanging up.

And last but not least… The Game of Life.

the game of life box

I LOVED this game when I was little, more than Monopoly, more than Trouble, more than anything, so to find this old version in fabulous condition almost brought a tear to my eye.

Child’s play.

Last Wednesday I was lucky enough to get the day to myself – sure I had to go grocery shopping, but since we get our fruit & veg in town almost an hour away, I like to make a day of it. An opping day, of course.

Before I even left though there was a park smack bang out the front of the oppy on the main road; fate, obviously.

I often skip this particular oppy except when they have $2 or half-price sales, they are the most expensive thift shop in town & rarely have anything I have to have, so I didn’t have very high hopes. Walking in I took note of the “All toys 1/2 price” hand-scrawled sign tacked to the window, so that’s where I headed first.

fw1

Nothing, nada, zip. Ugly, naked dolls, boring soft toys & copious amounts of tacky plastic junk. I turned to leave when something altogether different caught my eye; a Ferris wheel. An old, dusty, entirely adorable vintage toy Ferris wheel. Of course I grabbed it like I was a drowning sailor grabbing for a bobbing life preserver, but even as I did I was thinking “God, this is going to be expensive…”. $2.

fw2

$2 minus 50% = (insert thinking music here) $1.

fw3

The manageress was putting some other junk on the toy shelf as I was leaving that section & said “Oh I didn’t see that!" & came over for a closer look. I told her it was luck that I’d seen it too, out of the corner of my eye & demonstrated how it merrily plays a tune & rotates, very, very, slowly. She held it for a long time before she gave it back, muttering again about how she hadn’t seen it & how nice it was, I just smiled happily.

fw5

When I took my things to the counter the assistant started to add them up when the manger came rushing down the aisle. “That REALLY shouldn’t have been $2.” I looked at her; what did she want me to say? “Sorry, I’ll give you whatever you want for it”? She said to the assistant, also standing silently, “I’ll have to tell *insert old lady name here* not to do this. I can’t believe she put that out for $2. It should NEVER have been $2. NEVER”. The assistant just said “Oh”. I smiled & paid $4.50 or whatever it was for my bits & bobs & left. HAPPY. What would you have done?

fw4

Now I know opshops sell donated items to raise money for charity. I get that & I never, ever, ever, as I see some people do, try to haggle or begrudge them their money; if it’s too rich for my blood I just don’t buy it, & I try not to visit “trendy” opshops that have prices more inline with a proper second-hand dealer, but in this case I was lucky. That’s what opping is about after all, there is no skill in finding great things at opshops, just luck & persistence.

petercoddle

Luck struck again later that day when I found this old “game” for 50 cents. The instructions say that one player reads the story while the others read out their random cards to fill blanks in the story, so that lines like “…for safety, he sewed a             into the lining of his coat…” becomes “…for safety, he sewed a plucked chicken into the lining of his coat…”.

Yesterday.

Wow yesterday was a busy day! Instead of continuing to pack & ferry boxes from here to The Cottage, like perhaps a normal person would, I took Punk ‘sailing, went to an auction & ripped up carpet….

The garage sales yesterday were nothing to write home about, but, the auction… my FIRST auction… oh. Yeah.

It was SO FUN. And interesting as far as people watching goes. And CHEAP. Punky was awesome for ageeeeeeeeeees, but when she had finally had had enough I had purchased a whole bunch of goodness for $25.

We were a tad late so things had already commenced by the time we got there. I went & registered & bid on the first thing up when I got back – a box of ‘knitting’ stuff, for $1. I hadn’t looked in the box but I thought I could give the wool to Gran… imagine my delight when I got it back to the cottage later & found a ye olde kiddie’s craft book, some more copies of Golden Hands and a super cute sweater someone had made on their knitting machine that was a PERFECT FIT. It was such a weird yet marvellous coincidence.

I also got some more enamel ware, a pretty old sifter, cookie cutters, this gorgeous old lamp:

Lamp

…and a PRISTINE portable record player… yum.

Portable Record Player

After lunch I decided to see what was under the carpet. There was happinessjoysurprise & disappointment! I tell you… this house has it all.

Happiness – that the boards in the first room look fine & solid. Not very pretty but better than carpet…!

Room One

Joy – that the hall & Punky’s room had different, BEAUTIFUL, wide plank floorboards. I held my breath, hoping that it was only the first room that was different….

Punk's Room - Bye Bye Stinky Carpet...

Surprise – that not only was the ‘lounge’ different… it is painted… black.

Lounge

Disappointment – That our room has most of the sticky black rubber backing from the carpet underlay adhered to it….

Our Room.

The good news is that it comes off easily with some paint stripper, which is today’s job, after I rip up the rest of the tacking.

The Boy wonders why I have more enthusiasm for ripping up carpet & pulling out nails than I had for painting pickets (which he had to do because I kept ignoring it…)… or for packing even… He doesn’t understand that I’m actually making a difference over there. That the smell has diminished. That it already feels so much more open. That this, is my thing.

Hanging Out.

Rainbow Brite

Hollywood

You may have noticed a distinct lack of opshopped goodies here this week – & it’s not down to me being in a bad mood – there has just been nothing interesting to report… all week!

Today was Gymbaroo day again, so, armed with The Boy’s new GPS, I decided to hit a few new oppies, with some lunch & new parks along the way. The goldmines from last week were grimly bare, as were the first FOUR new oppies we trekked to.

Punky was happy – she found some goodies – a big rainbow bright doll – who’s outfit matched her shorts, and ‘Big Ted’ – who she’ll be dragging with her to see Playschool live next month, & who is already a favourite… I, however, was surprised & disheartened by the lack of oppy lovely for me.

But – thankfully – all was not lost!

Golden Hands

The last oppy saw me lugging away a massive stack of Golden Hands mags & a cute old magazine rack to keep them in. I LOVE these mags… the models, the crafts, the guys jauntily smoking pipes… it’s all good, baby. I’ll share some of my favourite parts of them soon. I will… but you know, I am forced to admit, that even if I had come away empty handed (no!), it still would have been a pretty awesome day.

Twinkle Twinkle

Punky rocks, you know?

What $25 Gets You On A Sunny Saturday Morning….

garagesalefinds

Garage Sale Haul: (Not all pictured!) Red lamps, a GORGEOUS kettle with strawberries on it, vintage tablecloths, ceramic bunny planter, Tupperware, a bird cage, two mirrors, old water games, a red enamel mug, a vintage photo frame, a cake pan, a singer sewing machine, 3 novels, a magnadoodle (to replace broken keep-Punk-occupied-while-Mummy-is-trying-to-drive-magnadoodle..) and a couple of Roald Dahl picture books…!

The Goods.

Ah, we had another awesome Saturday over here last week! Garage sales (The Boy even came with during his tea break), chai & banana bread at that fast food place that shan’t be named, the park, a bit of sewing, an afternoon trip to a closing down junk shop, yummy home-made fried rice for dinner… Good Stuff.

Only a couple of goodies today – one from the garage sales & the others from the oppy…

DSCF2056

Massive, lovely, mirror $10. The Boy said “That’ll look good once it’s done up.” Me thinks he’s never heard of “Shabby Chic”…

DSCF2062

Buttons!

DSCF2063

Rather special red vintage case (I’ve finally started packing & it has been discovered that my fabric stash does not fit in the cases it was previously allotted, and more need to be procured).

I also picked up a bright red set of drawers from the oppy for $10, ( …I don’t have a photo just now – they’re on the verandah & I’m in my pyjamas with hair sticking out to rival Albert Einstein’s & there are blokes building a house across the road with some sort of apocolyptic rap music blaring…) they’ve given me a great idea for our bedroom in The Cottage….

For more of the week’s vintage goodness, visit Sophie & the gang playing along with “Flea Market Finds”!

(…annnnnnnnd, if one meme is never enough, come spill the dirty secrets of your handbag via My Place and Yours – We’re playing all week!)

Mmmhmmm. Uhuh!

Goodies, goodies, goodies!

Sometimes I forget to share some opshop goodies with you because I end up posting about something else, and I’m not quite sure if there is an etiquette to posting about recent oppy finds – how recent is recent? Is last week too long ago…? Do you really care what I picked up three weeks ago Tuesday?!

I’ve included one of these lost items in my recent treasures for your perusal, because it may very well be my favourite find so far this year.

treasure

Yesterday we had a brief fossick in the local oppies before lunch, and found some lovely things, a gorgeous BRIGHT ORANGE enamel pot $3, some sweet enamel cups that will be perfect for tea when camping $1, some elephant planters that I was considering painting but their cuteness has grown on me $2 & a massive pile of books I actually want to read that came in the form of a $5 bag worth.

books

The red party-ware was a weekend find when, dismayed with the dismal offerings at the Garage Sales, we went for a morning shop at the only oppy that’s open on Saturday. (Speaking of Saturday – Punky and I had the BEST time last Saturday, we did the garage sale rounds, had hotcakes & banana bread [ …and chai…] at MickeyD’s, went to the park, went to the oppy, had a yummy lunch & went to the pool for the afternoon… so much fun & one tuckered out little Punk…!)

Now for the little something I found a few weeks ago at an oppy about 30 mins away, for $2.

Thermo Top Jug

Isn’t it divine?! On the bottom it says ‘Thermo Top’ (It is a thermal jug) ‘Made In Western Germany’ & I can’t find out anything else about it – except that I love it to pieces. There is a method to my madness with regard to all the red kitchenware, I have big plans for our kitchen renovations, whenever they may be, and red kitschy goodness will feature throughout.

What manner of treasures have you unearthed lately? I’d love to hear about them, so would everyone hanging out with Sophie this week for Flea Market Finds!

Living Creatively Comp - Op Shop Ship Shape - I won! I won!

OH! YEAH! BABY!

I am so excited I am all funny... you know how you get when you can't believe something really awesome & you can hardly think straight & you go a bit wobbly...?! Well that's me right now... I entered Living Creatively's Competitively Creative Competition for last month (with only a few days to spare mind you!); the theme was "Op Shop Ship Shape" & you had to share your reconned opshop goodies... As you can imagine I was thrilled to be able to enter, if ever there were a competition made for me! I could nae decide which of my furniture projects to submit because I love them all so I sent in my Writing Desk, Rocker & Buffet....

...and they choose the Buffet as the Winner!!

That's $100 that will be going straight back to the Oppy, thank you very much...!

Oh I am happy dancing all over the place!

Welcome any visitors from Living Creatively! Thank you so much to the folks over there who picked little old me... I am so glad that my passion for opshopping, thrifting, reusing... whatever you want to call it... shows through & even better, you liked it! I can only hope I might have been able to inspire one or two other crafty types to look at their oppy's unloved furniture in a new light!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to faint.

The Op Shop Rock!

An unexpected trip down the street this morning (we were headed for playgroup, but it turned out not to be on...) saw us score some bargains at a 1/2 price oppy sale, as if op shops weren't already cheap enough....
I'm sure we looked a sight; me pushing Punky's pram along with one hand, while wrestling with a massive wooden blackboard in the other. Punky clutching her new doll that was pretty much the same size as her... but hey, at least it wasn't as ridiculously hot as it has been.
So, for the princely sum of $5.75 we got the previously mentioned blackboard & ice-cream doll such as I have fond memories of from my childhood, a Fischer-price play mat (I couldn't resist it, it has a veggie garden in one corner!!), several pieces of material including a very funky paisley number & 2 great screw-top glass jars for that time in the future when I start to pickle & stew things... ;)

On Wednesday I also scored many bargains, I was Punk-less on the way to do the grocery shop so I took my time rummaging around in the books, something I normally can't do with Miss P demolishing all the shelves in sight. I found some GREAT craft books, a golden hands book on making toys, an Enid book for making babies clothes, a book on drafting & adapting patterns & a big thick book with a myriad of gift ideas, that has me longing for a jigsaw (and the knowledge to use one.). Also, more fabric!!

I'm hoping that my fantastic fabric finds will help motivate me to sew; I haven't sewn in a week... maybe even a week & a half... my sewing machine is in the back room, the "sun" room - also known as the "obviously hobbled together in an afternoon from pieces of crud that happened to be laying about, the more heat conducting the better, for occupant frying purposes" room & well... it's just been too bloody hot to go out there, let alone sit & sew.

My last attempt in the cool of early morning (probably 35 degrees already), a pair of PJ pants for myself from a cute op shop sheet with little girls printed on it, had me sweltering & hallucinating about an oasis in the middle of the room, so I thought I'd give the sewing a break until it was cooler & concentrate on lying in Punky's paddle pool while she climbed in & out of it & lying under the ceiling fans in the lounge room, alternating periodically, you know, just to keep the spice in our days.

Problem is... now it's cooler I seem to have lost my sewing mojo. I avert my eyes as I pass my sewing machine lest it realise that I am actively avoiding it & not just busy... doing, you know... stuff. I have maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaany things on my 'to do' list, or I would have, if I bothered to write such a list. Cute little perfect-for-the-punk vintage flares patterns that I bought on Ebay, a gorgeous little play set from a pattern generously sent to me by Gilly via the Crafty Mamas forum, more PJ pants for Moi, presents for peeps that I've been meaning to make for ages..... but I just can't seem to make a start...!
