Time Warp Wives

I stumbled upon this article the other day (I wasn’t looking for dachshunds or anything… *coughs*) & discovered the phenomenon of “Time Warp Wives”; Women who have retreated to a time in the past within their own homes. Not women who are a bit obsessed with 50s items or 60s clothes, but women who are actually, for all intents & purposes, living in the past.

My first reaction was “Cool”. But then I thought a bit more about it & realised I would not be able to do it. As much as I adore vintage things & the idea of living an idyllic 50s life (in a gorgeous & perfect looking 50s home); I just don’t have the happy home-maker in me. I do not live purely to pamper my “husband”, I would be mortified at the idea of him bringing home a mink as a birthday gift & I don’t look hot enough in teeny waisted vintage dresses.

Imagine all the modern things you’d miss if you moved into your own piece of history? No new artists, no new music, no internet (although these people seem to get around that). Nothing challenging. It strikes me as living in fear somewhat; living in the certainty of the past & retreating from the reality of today.

Mmmhmmm. Uhuh!

Goodies, goodies, goodies!

Sometimes I forget to share some opshop goodies with you because I end up posting about something else, and I’m not quite sure if there is an etiquette to posting about recent oppy finds – how recent is recent? Is last week too long ago…? Do you really care what I picked up three weeks ago Tuesday?!

I’ve included one of these lost items in my recent treasures for your perusal, because it may very well be my favourite find so far this year.

treasure

Yesterday we had a brief fossick in the local oppies before lunch, and found some lovely things, a gorgeous BRIGHT ORANGE enamel pot $3, some sweet enamel cups that will be perfect for tea when camping $1, some elephant planters that I was considering painting but their cuteness has grown on me $2 & a massive pile of books I actually want to read that came in the form of a $5 bag worth.

books

The red party-ware was a weekend find when, dismayed with the dismal offerings at the Garage Sales, we went for a morning shop at the only oppy that’s open on Saturday. (Speaking of Saturday – Punky and I had the BEST time last Saturday, we did the garage sale rounds, had hotcakes & banana bread [ …and chai…] at MickeyD’s, went to the park, went to the oppy, had a yummy lunch & went to the pool for the afternoon… so much fun & one tuckered out little Punk…!)

Now for the little something I found a few weeks ago at an oppy about 30 mins away, for $2.

Thermo Top Jug

Isn’t it divine?! On the bottom it says ‘Thermo Top’ (It is a thermal jug) ‘Made In Western Germany’ & I can’t find out anything else about it – except that I love it to pieces. There is a method to my madness with regard to all the red kitchenware, I have big plans for our kitchen renovations, whenever they may be, and red kitschy goodness will feature throughout.

What manner of treasures have you unearthed lately? I’d love to hear about them, so would everyone hanging out with Sophie this week for Flea Market Finds!

Punkins who lunch.

We went a'driving yesterday (it's almost twenty minutes past Midnight, so it really was yesterday, even though it feels like 'today', because it was today, sort of...), The Boy had an unexpected, yet overdue, day off, which meant Punk & I had a lovely set of wheels at our disposal, air conditioned wheels at that.

My only real aim for the day was to get me a new mouse. Clickity click click click. You hear that? It's a new mouse. We got one. It works just fine. It's dandy even.

Before the mouse need was satiated however, we had to fulfil a lunch need, that we did in an unexpectedly cool diner-come-take-away-come-chicken-joint. We entered due to lack of options & I was immediately floored by the vintage laminate table & vinyl chair goodness. I wanted every single piece of furniture there, but especially that lurvly red chair... it has spoiled me, that plethora of vintage mish mash, for when I got home I eyed my own white faux wood grain laminex table with it's decidedly dull grey studded vinyl chairs with despair. I have informed the boy that if I find a vintage laminex table with the marbled red top & the chrome sides that I have ALWAYS, ALWAYS wanted, I shall be buying it. Oh yes. Even if then we would have 3 kitchen tables. And the chairs.... oh, don't get me started! My heart aches for them! They would be so much more loved here with me....! If only I could have managed to stuff a couple into my bag... or smuggled some out under my billowy new circle skirt....

We also went by a camping store which just so happened to be having a one day only woo hoo & yea haw bells & whistles sale. We were swept along in the excitement & ended up filling our trunk with a tent (it's a little bit fancy & we're a little bit crap at putting up tents... so... stay tuned for undoubtedly horrible tales of tent erecting failure...), folding camping chairs, air mattresses, a pump for said air mattresses, a billy kettle (oh! how I love that billy kettle! I shall have to show it to you at a later date), campy type plates & cups "etc", a lamp... I'm sure there is more, just as I'm sure that we have forgotten some vital piece of equipment, which will only be discovered when we're out in the sticks, thoroughly encamped & in some sort of dire need.

So. We're going camping.

Next week.

I don't know yet, how I feel about it.

We shall see.
