I have a confession.
I have no frikkin idea how to correctly sew on a button.
I have sewn buttons on before, but not with any particular method. I just kind of knot & stab & twist & stick & knot & knot & knot again until it stays on kinda ok when I tug it. It looks like a bird’s nest on the underside of buttons I attempt to sew on.
This afternoon I almost finished a magnetic wrist pin-cushion cuff thingy for someone… apart from the bloody buttons. I made an attempt but it just wasn’t working out. What if she, like, looks under there?
So this evening’s mission is to look up how to correctly secure a button. I shall absorb this vital information like a sponge & accomplish the task at hand. I will finally know how to do something my decidedly un-crafty Mr has known how to do since catholic school when he was made to sew shirt buttons ripped off in schoolyard fights back on properly…
Do you have an embarrassing craft-related confession? This is a long way from being my only one, but it’s probably one of the worst.
More creative spaces over here, with people who are much more accomplished in the button-sewing-on department, I’m sure.
Ahh .. sewing on buttons. I can do it but am far from good at it. I just figure you cant be good at everything and thats ok by me. I am good at lots of other things, and I have no doubt you are too! (ps I am so happy to have found your blog - its great!)
ReplyDeleteI am sure that I can think of a few but my main one used to be that I wouldn't iron while sewing. I have now realised the error of my ways- it helps so much to iron as you go. Now my worse fault is not reading a pattern before sewing. Keeps life interesting...
ReplyDeleteI can sew on a button, but actually have no idea if it's the "right" way. Come to think of it mine are on the messy side too. Perhaps you can share if you find a neater way!
ReplyDeleteSewing on buttons is certainly not my favourite thing..hence all the spares floating about the house, waiting to be reunited with the garment they fell off!! Love the look of your work so far..
ReplyDeleteOh is there a way to sew on buttons rather than just sew through the holes and down and through another etc till it feels strong? DO share!
ReplyDeleteOMG, I almost jumped in the car to drive to your place and show you how to sew a button on, but then I remembered that the buzz box would run out of charge about half way there! Try this one: http://www.howcast.com/videos/179279-How-To-Sew-a-Button-By-Hand (ignore the ad at the start of it).

ReplyDeleteI don't think I do buttons the proper way but they stay on and they don't look TOO shabby - that's all that really matters, right? My crafty shame is sewing zippers. At this point I pretty much avoid any pattern with a zipper... which limits things rather a lot!
ReplyDeleteha ha i can't believe how bad i am at making just a basic zip purse. so simple but i can't do it! is there a right way to sew a button?!
ReplyDeleteOh Vic, my button sewing is more functional than stylish too - let us know how you go!
ReplyDeleteOne of my craft shames (I have more shame than success), is that I've been knitting since I was about thirteen years old, and have Never. Finished. Anything.
*shame*
*and lack of discipline*
I love your crafting by the seat of your pants style. You crack me up a d you are so sweet to think that they will look at the back (which they wont cause your stuff is so cool). I recall being taught to place a pin between the fabric and the button.
ReplyDeleteMine is zips, I am useless and being a self taught knitter and crocheter I don't hold the yarn correctly, have had people show me how to do it correctly but I dont care, I don't want to relearn:)
Now that you mentioned it, I don't know how to sew on a button properly, either...
ReplyDeletethe only right way I know is so it doesn't come off.
ReplyDeleteMy embarrassing craft secret is, Im no good on the sewing machine, recently I took a beginners class and well there's alot of room for improvement. I hand sew most of my bears. xo
Button holes are probably my most difficult. Not to mention I have a fight with my machine every time. The rectangle never comes out looking straight. Thankfully I do not run a business where sewing perfectly straight is a requirement so for now I'm saved.
ReplyDeleteI've attempted a zipper once. That was a disaster too until I realised (rather someone told me) that there is a zipper foot!!!! That will teach me to ignore the machine manual and its explanation of all the different attachments.
I am exactly the same! I just do whatever until it looks like it will stay on. Probably not the best method but its worked for me so far.
ReplyDeleteButtons are a bit messy for me to but I just tend to wing it...it's the button holes I dislike.

For shame! I learned in Year 7 textiles class.
