The Kitschmas tree.

I know I said we weren’t going to have a “proper” Christmas tree this year, but since Spence has been pulling the fabric one off the wall anyway, & Punk has been enthralled with every Christmas tree we pass, when I saw this old plastic tree complete with vintage baubles (the type of which I honestly haven’t seen for years & years) at the oppy for $5… well.

It’s smaller than the tree we have so I was able to put it up on the cupboard away from my grabby babe & I can’t tell you how happy it has made me!

If you’re going to have a plastic tree, you might as well have one that screams it from the rooftops first of all. This tree doesn’t pretend to be a real tree, it says “I’m plastic. I have hard spikey plastic branches & a trunk moulded to look like no wood you’ve ever seen. Deal with it.”

Then there is the Santa. I don’t know if he’s supposed to be a tree topper, but he’s bloody perfect as one.

And the baubles. Oh, the baubles! Look at the colours! I had to re-thread about half of them, they either had no cord to hang them or had already been restrung on elastic bands that were so old & brittle they broke into pieces when I picked them up.

ornaments

A couple of little old ornaments make it, I think. My thrifted deer has taken his rightful place on a Christmas tree, he didn’t like the mantle where he couldn’t even stand up properly.

And that is our Christmas tree. It makes me smile every time I look at it. It is going to see years of happy Christmases now, I hope it’s already had many.

  1. Love it. My Nan & Pa had all those types of baubles, collected through the 50s and 60s. Memories!

  8. You are officially the Queen of Op Shopping! I can't believe you found the perfect tree with decorations. I remember having similar decorations on the tree when I was little. Well Done.

  12. wow its like stepping back in to all our childhoods! Now all you need to do is wash the floors down with some thick pine fresh floor cleaner for that "genuine" christmas tree smell! Brought to you direct from 1974.

  13. this is the sort of tree I wanted - just perfect! I struggle with the 7ft $20 trees made in China that obviously support child labour! I have searched and searched every op shop - but dont worry I havnt finished yet. Instead we have a beach branch - my children aren't wrapped in my "theme". Good find - but you always do! Merry Christmas.

  16. Wow! Talk about a blast from the past. I remember those baubles. We had them on our tree growing up until they started unravelling and knotting together in the storages box. And the little mini santa ornament, we had that one too. Thanks for the memories. Great tree.

  18. Just gorgeous. I passed up some vintage Christmas decs the other day for 60c a pack and now I am kicking myself. They look great, the baubles are so familiar to me and it just seems like yesterday...sigh.

  19. I love it! Ours is plastic fantastic and up on a bench also and full to the brim with decos that were mine as a child as well as others collected along the way. Don't think I'd feel like it was Christnas without a tree. Although I do miss the 'smell' of Christmas that a real free brings. I have seen on blogland people brewing the 'Christmas smell' on the stove using a concoction of spices. Maybe I could do that instead. ;)

  20. I love it! Exactly the same type as the tree from my childhood that my parents are still using! theirs is 6ft tall though and they put the play pen around it so my little brother couldn't pull off the baubles :)

  21. oh my god, I had a tree just like that as a kid! I loved the fake brown base, and do the little pieces of branches pull off the little ends and have like a little hole tube on the end?? love it! I have a few of those balls too, from op shops, and my parents tree/vintage old junky bits and pieces saved from my nans christmas tree days <3
    xx
