**CLOSED** Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day 2011

****WINNER is MICHELLE from Daydream Believers****

I really enjoy the Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day, even if I forgot to offer up a giveaway of my own last year (might have had something to do with having a four week old baby at the time?). It’s a chance to discover new blogs & enter giveaways for things you might actually like from people that are offering prizes just for the fun of it, not because they’re being paid to or because they are hoping for something in return.

winenids

I am offering two vintage Enid Gilchrist books, Play Clothes & Toddler Clothes. These are very popular amongst certain people in the sewing set, some may even say collector’s items, so count yourselves lucky I’m too lazy to draft my own patterns….!

With these trusty Enid’s you could make a range of retro classics for your baby or child; think simple shifts, funky coats or even swimwear! If, like me, you don’t think you’ll be getting out the drafting paper any time soon, these books are a brilliant piece of Australian sewing & home economics history & a wonderful addition to any crafty bookshelf.

Below is a certain little Punk (*sobs*) in a dress from Play Clothes, made by Tracy way back in April 2009.

HOW TO ENTER:

All you have to do to enter is let me know what was the most memorable piece of clothing your parents dressed you in as a child? Good or bad, enquiring minds want to know. Cast your mind back to your baby photos for recollections of hand knitted jumpers or a little later when perhaps you wish your Mother had warned you against that ra-ra skirt & matching top with mesh sleeves ensemble… I’ll choose the winner at random & I’m happy to post internationally. Entries close December 16th.

Big thanks to Deb for reminding me about giveaway day today or I’d have missed out again!

  1. Ohhh delightful! In all the young photo's of me I am wearing leggings. Like every single picture. All sorts of colours, But my favorite would have to be the stripy rainbow ones I had when I was 5~!

  2. I loved my burgundy leg warmers!!! They were the bees knees :)

  3. A child of the 70's and hippie parents, it would have to be my red, white, blue and yellow chevron patterned polyester blouse with a BIG collar. I wore it for my school picture in the 4th grade, complete with my new perm and granny glasses. If you see the pic its a hard one to forget:)Cyndy

  4. Dont enter me as I too am too lazy to draft...

But since you asked- think beige knickerbockers and one of 2 pastel shirts with clogs. Well, actually don't think. It is all too hideous really. All I can say is that it was the 70s/early 80s and I don't think that there is any photographic proof in existance (*phew*)

  5. Oh, those books would be so much fun since I am about to become a first-time grandmother! And I promise to not make my granddaughter wear neon orange ski pants like my parents bought for me!

  6. I only have disappointment to add: an outfit including shorts and a halter top that my mom was making for me, but never finished. It was the first clothing I remember being really excited for, but don't remember ever wearing as it was never finished. I have learned never to mention anything to my kids unless it is finished;-)
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  7. wow those books would be fantastic!!! I actually have a good memory of this fantastic little navy blue dress that had a drop waist and a white collar with two cherries embroidered on it. loved that dress...

  8. These look like fantastic and quirky books! My favorite outfit when I was about 7 was a dress my mom made for me out of white fabric with little red strawberries. My younger sister had one that matched. We thought it was fun to match and pretend we were twins.

  9. oh , thats just the most amazing thing I could hope to win in a giveaway! I loove enid gilchrist books, though the nearest I have come to one is on the screen in front of me.

my most memorable childhood dress was one that matched with my little sis.. it was an elaborate formal dress in sky blue, and we always used to wear them together.. still love the feeling they gave us :)

  10. Hi! Thanks for the giveaway. Like the previous commenter I'm interested in Enid Gilchrist's books but haven't been able to find any.

Childhood clothing memories include a green knitted poncho with pink plastic sunglasses and a yellow beret combination (immortalised in a photograph) - and a purple shellsuit which I absolutely loved. I guess I'm pleased that my mum let me choose my own outfits...

  11. Good - pyjamas with pictures my grandpa told me fairy tales about. Bad - black, gray, brown BIG everything. I can ´t even wear black on the upper half on my body...too sad.

  12. Thank you for the giveaway :D

My most memorable bits of clothing that I can remember is a play outfit (matching spaghetti strap tank w/ shorts) my mom made me from a robin's egg blue calico with lace edging, and she made a matching tooth fairy pillow that I carried everywhere when I was little.

  13. It was a costume. In 2nd grade, I had to be broccoli for some presentation we were doing. So my mom made this really realistic costume from brown paper bags. I still remember it vividly.

  14. I'm drooling over those books. My favorite clothing item, was a Superman t-shirt, that had that sparkly, plasticky, decal type stuff on it, that was so popular in the 70's.

  15. egads, what a fun giveaway! i bet my mama made me clothes just like the little frocks in these books, haha!! i do have particularly fond memories of a wonderful plaid wool coat that my mom sewed me when i was 5 or 6. i seriously loved that thing. i outgrew it and she passed it along to another family and one day we got together with them and i saw another child wearing MY coat and i completely melted down. oh goodness, what a stinker i was! ;)

thanks you for the wonderful giveaway!

  16. Super super cute picks of little Punky!! I'm going to show my age here, but I remember having a brand new blouse (most of my clothes were hand-me-downs) with long spaniel ear length collars!! FANCY :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. I remember a cute white dress with small embroidery of flowers and a buterfly. I loved it!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Even though I hated dresses, there was this "fluffy" blue dress that I loved to wear. It has a lot of layers in the skirt that made it poufy. Thanks for the giveaway! robyn(dot)geddes(at)gmail(dot)com

  19. Oh jeez -- this brings me back (I kinda looked like the little boy when I was his age...stupid bowl cut!) For some reason what stands out to me was a pair of burgundy cords I used to wear. I don't think I particularly liked them, probably because they didn't help with everyone thinking I was a boy!

  20. This is just my style. AND I have 2 toddlers- a boy and a girl. :)

  21. Cool giveway, however I too am too lazy to makepatterns so dont include me, but since your asking re outfits...I was 7, we were having a school trip to the local woodlands and had to dress up as robin hoods men. My mum cut arms and a neck hold from a pototo sack and painted it green. It was merely embarassing and a bit cold, until it rained...

    ReplyDelete
  22. Great giveaway! My mom made me a smocked red dress for my 5th birthday. I saved it but somehow my daughter turned 11 this year and escaped wearing it. Guess there are always grandkids ...

    ReplyDelete
  23. Super giveaway! Thanks so much! My parents were pretty cool about clothing, let us choose what we wanted, mostly, and my mom made us some fun stuff. But one year, my aunt took me back to school shopping and let me pick out fake leather trousers and a hot pink sweatshirt with glitter on it. I loved it, but my mom was not amused. LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Wow, these are special :D

Eek, the most memorable ... probably the salmon pink hand knitted sweater with fur trim hood. It was the colour of my great-granny's support stockings and I hated it.

  25. I won't leave it to your imagination. http://rooney.net.au/photogallery/timeline.jpg My fave of these "memorable " outfits (1967 3yo - 1975 10yo) was the hippy dress on the end, made by my Nanna. I wore those indestructible green synthetic bermudas for way longer than I should have.

    ReplyDelete
  26. My sister and I had matching bellbottom jeans and yellow and white snoopy sweatshirts. We wore those things out! Either that or the brown floral gunny sack dresses we got for christmas one year

    ReplyDelete
  27. My mum used to make me Knitted jumpers..they itched like hell and the neck line was always way too hight. I'm pretty sure i told her i was allergic to them to get out of wearing them.

    ReplyDelete
  28. an incredible itchy purple polyester floor length dress w/white flower trim. so uncomfortable but i would sleep in it if i was allowed. (i wasn't)

    thanks for the giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  29. In about 1974 my mom made me a pantsuit out of denim that looked like it had bleach spots on it...on purpose! I loved it, but in retrospect, it was hideous. Merry Christmas!

  31. A knitted dress my mum make for me.
Thx for the chance to win ^^v

  32. My mum made me a Strawberry Shortcake dress when I was in prep or grade one. I wore it all the time and I still have it and I'm waiting patiently til my daughter will fit it.
It's the '80s version with the apron and frills and total awesomeness!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Would have to be the delightful matching outfits my mum made for my sister and I which we wore to meet HRH Queen Elizabeth (yes I actually have photo's of us talking to the queen and giving her flowers in this delightful ensemble). Purple sloppy Joe jumpers with applique's a child under an umberella and a golly wogg. Matching purple sloppy joe fabric layered ruffle skirts. Just try to imagine. Ahh the 1980's.

  34. That romper is so sweet! My WORST memory of childhood clothing was a velur (sp) outfit - maroon coloured. I remember crying every time my hands would rub the fabric...it felt DISCUSTING, and my mother insisted I wear it...alot.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I was a flower girl once and I had to wear the frilliest pinkest most revolting dress (I was a tomboy). Other than that clothes don't stand out but my mom insisted on dressing me in black patent shoes -awful!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. my fashion memory is not of my parents dressing me, but the first time I chose my own outfit - a blue dress with orange cardigan... amazingly my mum let me wear it to kindy that day (which was kindy photo day! so somewhere there is evidence...) PS please don't enter me...

  37. I remember when I was small my mother bought me a frock with roses sewn on them. I was so happy then.

  38. My mom bought me a crushed velvet blue suit. It had hearts for pockets on the jacket and and on the butt. I had a love/hate relationship with it. I thought it was really cute, but it was really hot and itchy to wear.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Unfortunately for all involved, my parents were not allowed to dress me.. I chose all my own clothes.. and it showed. Mexican dress with a turtleneck and rainbow leggings underneath with red rubber rain boots? Oh yes. I was queen of layering..

    ReplyDelete
  40. I was raised by my great grandmother, and I remember her dressing me in a white fuzzy turtleneck sweater and corduroy bell-bottoms one time. I was really embarrassed because this was not a trendy look at the time. Would love to have these books :o) Thanks for the giveaway!

  41. I think my turquoise Jump-suit is the most memorable!

  42. The worst outfit has to be a black faux velvet and gold lame, puffy sleeve dress (with a big ol' bow embellishment!) that my mother dressed me in one Christmas (in her defense it was the 80s haha, and in my defense, I was too young to protest!) ;) To make it even better (or worse!) she used perm rollers to create crazy curls and topped it all off with a very large, floppy, gold bow. Eek! Best,

  44. Haha! My most memorable piece is a blouse I HATED!! It had a huge ruffly collar on it. When my mom tried to make me wear it I cried and she gave in and returned it to the store. :D

  45. Very early on my mother allowed me to dress myself, so I am nto sure who to blame but I had this red velvet dress that was super super short with no knickers to go with it so I would wear it with yellow cords. It looked awful! Maybe you should have a linky party with us posting our worst childhood outfit, totally cute I think!

  46. My Mum dressed me as a flower complete with crepe paper petal skirt and a crepe paper flower hat! My parents had only just purchased their pride and joy Brownie Box camera So there is a virtual avalanche of black and white snaps of me in this outfit preserved in time a faded flower LOL

    ReplyDelete
  47. When I turned 5, my mother made up a treasure hunt, with clues for me to follow to my present. My gift was the most beautiful dress I'd ever seen...white with polka dots in every color of the rainbow, and a full, twirly skirt. Looking back, making me a dress was probably the nicest she could afford that year, but at 5, I felt like a princess in it. :-)

  48. I would love this for sewing for the grandchildren. My most memorable was a windowpane check dress - white with red - and it had a tie at the back. One side of the tie was red and the other was white. It also had a navy blue duster. Darling!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I would love these as my son is 10 months old and I am always modifying patterns/using tutorials off the internet.
Anyways, my most memorable outfit was a florescent yellow dress with black poc-a-dots (my sister had one that was the opposite). My mom made them for us and we loved them! They looked nice, but you could play in them without worrying about messing them up. :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. I remember a blue jumper dress with a red calico blouse that my mom made me and to this day, I could probably draw the pattern of the blouse's print!

    ReplyDelete
  51. these look absolutely RAD. my mom made me some little dress that had a big ol patch on it that said: Rock 'N' Roll. it was cute. the most horrifying thing was in 6th grade when she cut my board straight hair... umm crooked like a spiral staricase, and told me it was the style. !!!!! ok it was 1990 but i was embarrased

    ReplyDelete
  52. I had a blankie that my mum had knitted for me. It's in every picture and I still have it upto today.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Ummm I will only admit to a bright yellow linen shift (suitably 70's short) with a white peter pan collar...eeek...white ankle socks and black patent leather buckle shoes...*faints*

    ReplyDelete
  54. My grandma made me a bright pink polka dress complete with PUFFY sleeves. It would have been super cute except I was 14. Yes I did have to wear it a few times

    ReplyDelete
  55. my most memorable was really really bad really really big bows!

    ReplyDelete
  56. for some reason I remember this weird shawl thing that my parents used to put me in. I remember that it had really tiny pleats (almost like it was corrugated). It was uncomfortable and itchy as well. Yipes!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I love the knitted dress they dressed me in when I was a toddler and my 5th birthday dress too :D
I love to draft my own patterns - thanks for the chance!

  58. What an unusual question! I love it. You know I hated most of the clothes I had as a child. But one dress was very intriguing to me. It was red and it had smocking at the front. When I was little I could just loose myself in it looking at it ... I loved the way you could see how it was done but how it looked so hard and complicated. :-)

    I still have that dress!

Thanks for such a fun giveaway!

  59. Oh, wow - what amazing books!

My most memorable outfit...I grew up in the 70s and my parents were 'long-haired hippies', so I had some interesting clothes to say the least! I remember when I was six or seven being upset that my cousin (a year older than I and a boy) had a blue three-piece suit to wear on special occasions & I decided I wanted one. So my parents got me one. It was burgundy. I loved it. I have no idea where it went to, but I'd love to find it. xo

  63. yellow checked dress with smocking and flowers on the bodice. Puffed sleeves. A lot of work went into it. But a certain nameless little girl reFUSED to wear it. Wish I still had it!

  67. Oh so fun! I had a chartreuse knit dress that I wore nearly non-stop when I was 8. Can't think why... at least there aren't any photos of it!
