Ignorance is bliss.

So, it seems to be that it wasn’t all that long ago when I had one lonely blog follower. When I got to fifty I was shocked & amazed, and have continued to be pleasantly surprised ever since…

However.

I get very self-conscious when that number goes down – not because I think that everyone should read my blog or like it, I am still pretty surprised that anybody thinks my drivel is worth the time it takes to read, but because I think I have done something to offend them, or bore them, or something, because they were following, weren’t they, and now they’re not?!

Blogger eased my anxiety somewhat by somehow making the text of how many followers there are in the box the same colour as the background so I have to physically highlight it to see if the number is up or down or static and generally, I can’t be assed to check, but sometimes I do, and sometimes the number has gone down by one, and I think “What did I do?”.

(Looks like Twits have similar issues…)

  1. I never check mine, so therefore I won't stress about it!
Maybe move your followers box a little bit further down the page so you don't see it as soon as the page loads?

  2. Oh I know!!! In the last week I've lost 2, and while I don't really care about how many followers I have (like I certainly never go out and try to get more by bribing or anything) it still feels weird when they stop following. Glad I don't have facebook or anything, I would not be able to cope if people un-friended me!

  4. I thought the same way too to start with and then I realised, based on my own habits, the may just be people who are trialling my blog, or maybe even those horrid emailers who send you notes saying "I love your blog. It would be perfect for....." and then ask favours from you!! Now I don't worry. I also never delete myself from someone once I've joined up because I really don't use that list anyway and so I'm not getting confused. I do clear out my sidebar list from time to time based on what I'm reading and currently interested in so maybe that is what others are doing to their followers lists. Cherrie

  5. HA, I'm exactly the same, not that fussed by how many follow but when some one stops, I can't help but wonder what I did? xo

  6. I had some strange ones so I removed them! There blos were strange. I would not worry about it - I lost all of the ones that I followed when I changed blogs and havehad to start again (that is the liking and those that follow me!) Some times think that people also hit follow if you have a comp or something as well for a hance to win and then never come back again.

  7. Ah the mind games we play on ourselves. Be kind to yourself, some people go through a rash of "following" followed by a rash of "un-following" once they work out whether the blog they have found is for them or not. Try not to take it to heart their needs obviously don't match your output and that's ok, we're all different. It's also possible they've clicked through from a link on someone else's blog and then it's not a perfect match. Either way, you are a wonderful person and the number of your followers is only as important as you let it be.

  8. NOw I am going to have a look how many I have I am abit vague like that and would probably take it personally as well- but, if this is any consolation, I have unfollowed some blogs in 'blogger' but directly subscribed to them in google not using 'google friends connect' (what ever that is!)- so that may not show up in 'followers'- I think anyway...? And, I have tried to 'unfollow' some blogs but it seems impossible- I am not very technical!

  9. I once did one of those 'follow this blog to enter' sort of giveaways and I just assume that when people drop off that they never really cared in the first place. It is a strange feeling though.

  12. oooh i do feel a bit the same. i then go through the list and pain myself trying to think who has unfollowed me. i can never figure it out though :s
i'm ok with twitter though, as most of my followers seem to be spammy anyway ha ha!

  13. Maybe you could look at it another way - be glad they've gone - they were obviously the wrong sort to be following you in the first place!

  14. Because I use wordpress I don't have a follow option on my blog, people just have to subscribe to the RSS feed using their preferred reader. Good because I don't see it go up and down, bad because I don't know how many followers I actually have! I follow you via a firefox app called 'feedly' rather than your follow box so your follow box isn't 100% accurate anyway and it doesn't count people like me!
